Summer reading

School's almost out. The humidity is rising. And pool chairs are filling up faster than cash registers at a gas station.

For me, it's time to catch up on all the reading I have wanted to do but haven't while I've been taking my masters classes. I have several spiritual/religious books scattered around my apartment: Philip Yancey's "Prayer," Rob Bell's "Velvet Elvis," Pope John Paul II's "Crossing the Threshold of Hope," and I need to order Pope Benedict XVI's "Jesus of Nazareth."

Is there anything out there you recommend? Religious or even a secular book with some good spiritual themes?

"Swimming with Scapulars" by Matthre Likona. Katie recommended it to me. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you like Christian fiction, the "Mark of the Lion" series by Franciene Rivers is great. There are 3 books in it. I think the first one is A Voice in the Wind but it has been a while since I read them. Also, the Zion Covenant and then other series by Brook and Bodie Thoene are very good. Delores Hooepr

Here are a few I always recommend: "The Jesus Creed," by Scot McKnight, "A New Kind of Christian," by Brian McLaren, "Traveling Mercies," Anne LaMott.

Try "Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything across Italy, India, and Indonesia" by Elizabeth Gilbert.

Try "Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia". It's a fabulous read with great spiritual depth, no matter your personal religion.

If your looking for something that gets to the heart of Christian living, try reading Treatise on the Love of God, by St. Francis de Sales. The new translation I have is easy to read, it's not long but very inspiring.
